      Fun facts

🚀 FROM PUNK ROCKER TO FASHION EMPIRE:

The 114.2-metre ”NAUSICAÄ” (formerly known as “Project Cosmos”) is owned by Yusaku Maezawa, a Japanese billionaire entrepreneur with one of the most eclectic backgrounds in the ultra-wealthy world. Born in 1975, Maezawa's path to billions didn't follow the typical corporate trajectory. He started as a drummer in the hardcore punk band Switch Style during his high school years at Waseda Jitsugyo (1991-1993), releasing their first EP in 1993.

After forgoing university, he travelled to the United States with his girlfriend, where his obsession with collecting imported punk and hardcore records became the foundation for’ Start Today’, incorporated in 1998.

This mail-order music business evolved into Zozotown in 2004, which became Japan's largest online fashion retailer. In September 2019, ‘SoftBank’ acquired a majority stake for $3.7 billion, making Maezawa extraordinarily wealthy. Forbes estimated his net worth at $1.5 billion as of 2025.

      🥇 LURSSEN’S FIRST FUEL-CELL YACHT:

”NAUSICAÄ” represents the culmination of Lürssen's fuel-cell research dating back to 2009.

The yacht is equipped with two 500kW methanol fuel cells that generate hydrogen onboard from methanol, then convert it to electricity without combustion, noise, or harmful emissions. This allows the yacht to:

      • cruise at 7 knots for up to 1,000 nautical miles with zero emissions

      • remain at anchor for up to 15 nights relying solely on clean energy

      • operate in complete silence, free from traditional generator noise

The system is paired with conventional MTU 16V4000 diesel engines for traditional operation, achieving a cruising speed of approximately 14 knots and top speed exceeding 20 knots.

🚀 HE LITERALLY WENT TO SPACE:

Maezawa became the first Japanese civilian to visit the International Space Station, launching from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard a Russian Soyuz MS-20 spacecraft.

The trip, which reportedly cost him $88 million, saw him spend 12 days in orbit alongside video producer Yozo Hirano, who documented the voyage for Maezawa's YouTube channel.

During his stay, Maezawa performed 100 tasks suggested by the public, ranging from introducing fellow astronauts to more whimsical activities like playing golf, blowing bubbles and throwing paper airplanes in microgravity. He even conducted a Twitter cash giveaway from space!

      🐦 TWITTER WORLD RECORD:

Maezawa holds the record for the most retweeted tweet in history. In 2019, he made a tweet offering ¥100 million (approximately $1 million) to 100 random followers who retweeted and followed him garnered over 3.8 million retweets.

He has to be the coolest billionaire ever, don’t you think?

🪁 NAUSICAÄ... WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

”Nausicaä” is the protagonist of Hayao Miyazaki's legendary 1982 manga and 1984 anime film ”Nausicaä” of the Valley of the Wind, a post-apocalyptic fictional anime/film.

The name's Greek meaning, ’burner of ships’ , adds to an ironic twist!

🛸 A DESIGN UNLINE ANY OTHER:

NAUSICAÄ's both exterior and interior design come from Marc Newson, the legendary Australian industrial designer born in Sydney in 1963. Newson's portfolio is staggering: he designed the Apple Watch, the iconic Lockheed Lounge chair (which sold for £1.1 million at auction), airplane interiors for Qantas Airways and products for Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Nike, Ferrari, and Montblanc.

In the yachting world, Newson previously designed the iconic Aquariva by Marc Newson speedboat (2010) for Italian brand Riva, a limited edition of 22 units. More significantly, he designed the 139.7-metre “SOLARIS” (delivered in 2021), one of the world's largest superyachts (which you can check also check out on my database!)

"Working with an extremely creative client has given us the rare opportunity to push the boundaries" Newson said. "Everything from the smallest detail to the silhouette—outside, inside and everything in between—is our design. We were therefore able to utilize and explore all creative possibilities without restraint."

The result is a yacht that looks more like a spacecraft than a traditional vessel - smooth geometric lines, organic shapes and an absence of sharp edges that characterize Newson's signature style.

One of “NAUSICAÄ” 's most striking features is a glass-domed private study connected to an outdoor terrace on the upper deck. To achieve this, Lürssen developed custom glass-bending techniques for large sections of thick glass while preserving optical clarity for 360-degree panoramic views.

”NAUSICAÄ” also carries an Ice Class 1D rating, allowing her to safely navigate light ice conditions, opening up destinations from tropical waters to polar extremes. CEO Peter Lürssen noted this enables the yacht to explore "all five major oceans, and all seven continents". (+)
