Fun Facts
👶🏽 THE (NORMAL) BEGINNING:
The yacht that would become “H3” began its life as ”AL MIRQAB” in 2000, commissioned by Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar (he was now another mega yacht also called “AL MIRQAB”, you can also check her out on my database!)
What makes this build particularly interesting is that the hull was assembled in Durban, South Africa, before being shipped to the Oceanco yard in the Netherlands for completion. At 95 meters, she was the 7th largest yacht built by Oceanco at the time of delivery.
In 2006, Indian liquor baron and Formula 1 team owner Vijay Mallya purchased the yacht for approximately $113 million and renamed her ”Indian Empress”. The “Indian Empress” has become a sort of icon for the Monaco Grand Prix. Especially at the 2014 run, where the Prince of Monaco himself was seen on board!
In 2016, Mallya invested €6.4 million in a refit that replaced the deep-red interior and ornate gilt-work with contrasting woods, pale neutral colors, and large contemporary artworks.
🏳️ THE AUCTION FIASCO:
On June 28, 2018, the yacht was auctioned in Malta. The opening bid was €25 million, and the winning bid came in at €43.5 million from “Credityacht Ltd”, a Malta-registered company whose sole shareholder was Hossein Asadollahi, an Iranian national.
The winning bidder had seven days to deposit the funds but failed to meet the deadline. Credityacht then requested a 15-day extension, which some creditors accepted while others declined (there were 13 creditors, they auctioned the vessel).
A second auction was scheduled for September 19, 2018, with serious bidders required to deposit €1 million 48 hours in advance. Credityacht was banned from participating.
However, the second auction never took place. On September 18, 2018, one day before the scheduled auction, the yacht was sold to a member of the Saudi Royal Family for €35 million, which was significantly less than the original failed bid. The yacht was renamed ”NEOM”, probably after the futuristic city project in Saudi Arabia.
⭐ ACCOMMODATION AND AMENITIES:
”H3” accommodates 20 guests in 10 cabins and 32 crew members. The forward-facing master suite on the owner's deck features his-and-hers ensuites, walk-in wardrobes, a private lounge that converts into a cinema and a dining room for 14 guests. The owner's deck also includes a private terrace and direct foredeck access.
The bridge deck features a VIP suite with its own private aft deck terrace and lounge. The remaining guest accommodation includes five double staterooms and three twin staterooms.
Water Features and Outdoor Spaces
The main deck hosts an adjustable-depth infinity pool with a convertible flush deck that can transform into a dance floor for events, complete with a waterfall feature spilling over the polished chrome ‘H3’ nameplate. The sun deck features a forward-facing whirlpool with panoramic views, along with a bar and lounge areas. The lower deck aft houses an extensive beach club with a fold-down swim platform for water access.
The lower deck is dedicated to wellness, featuring a comprehensive spa area with a hammam, massage room, sensory shower, beauty salon, nail and hair salon. The sun deck includes a fully equipped gym with panoramic views.
A climate-controlled winter garden with retractable glass walls can accommodate up to 32 guests for dining, making it ideal for corporate charters and shoreside events. The main deck features interactive video walls for dynamic displays and a dual staircase wrapping around a waterfall feature, plus a welcome lobby and bar area.
”H3” carries an impressive array of tenders: a 10.1-meter Compass Open Sport tender, an 11.1-meter Compass Limo yacht tender and two 6.2-meter Yachtwerft Meyer rescue tenders.
A touch-and-go helipad at the bow can accommodate an H155 helicopter.
💥 ABANDONED AND IMPOUNDED:
The glamour came to an abrupt end when Mallya's business empire collapsed. In March 2017, after Mallya was charged with money laundering and defrauding Indian banks to the tune of over $90 million, the ”Indian Empress” was seized in Malta.
Mallya had effectively abandoned the vessel in September 2017, leaving more than 40 crew members unpaid since that time.
The unpaid wages totaled over $1 million. The London-based maritime union Nautilus International secured a maritime lien on behalf of the crew in March 2018, giving them legal claim over the vessel. The union eventually recovered $615’000 from the vessel's insurers under the International Maritime Labour Convention, but approximately $330’000 remained unpaid.
😮 THE UNBELIEVABLE TRANSFORMATION:
In 2020, the yacht was returned to Oceanco's Alblasserdam facilities for what would become one of the most comprehensive yacht refits in history. The rebuild, which actually began in 2019 and concluded in 2023, was so extensive that Lloyd's Register classified the result as a new build.
The yacht was stripped down to its bare hull, with approximately 60% of the original structure retained. The entire superstructure was completely replaced and the vessel was extended from 95 meters to 105.26 meters (an addition of 10 meters total, with 8 meters added to the aft deck and 2 meters to the bow!).
British design studio Reymond Langton Design handled both exterior and interior redesign, with naval architecture by Lateral Naval Architects and Oceanco. Remarkably, Richard Hein of The A Group, who designed the yacht's original 2000 configuration, served as the owner's representative for the rebuild. The design team was complete.
The transformation replaced the yacht's boxy profile with sculptural curves and dramatically increased natural light by expanding window area from 220 square meters to 392, with many floor-to-ceiling panes. Andrew Langton described the new interior as “relaxed, but still with a little bit of show”.
The yacht was officially delivered in 2024 with a full shipyard new-build warranty.
