      Fun facts

🌍 THE WORLD’S LONGEST PRIVATE YACHT:

“AZZAM”, meaning ‘resolute’ in Arabic, holds the prestigious title of the world's longest private motor yacht at 180 meters / 590 feet.

Launched in 2013 at Lürssen Shipyard in Bremen, Germany, she eclipsed the previous record holder, Roman Abramovich's 162.5-meter “Eclipse”, by an impressive 17.2 meters.

The yacht maintained this title for six years until August 2019, when the research vessel “REV Ocean” was launched at 183 meters. However, “AZZAM” remains the world's longest privately-owned yacht dedicated to luxury rather than research purposes.

🔥 THE $600 MILLION SPEED DEMON:

Despite her massive size, “AZZAM” was never designed purely to be the world's largest yacht. The original brief was for a vessel that could reach the owner's private island off the coast of Abu Dhabi as quickly as possible.

Originally designed to be just 145 meters, the yacht grew to 180 meters during the ‘optimization’ process to accommodate all the owner's requirements while maintaining sleek proportions.

This makes her one of the world's fastest superyachts, with a top speed exceeding 32 knots - as fast as a Navy frigate! At full speed, she burns an eye-watering 13 tonnes of fuel per hour, enough to fill 309 average-sized cars.

”AZZAM” 's extraordinary speed comes from her massive propulsion system. She is powered by two gas turbines and two MTU diesel engines producing a combined output of 94’000-97’000 horsepower (35,048 kW). This power is delivered through four pump-jets. Two fixed round water outlets in the center of the stern and two with thrust vectoring capabilities using movable duct outlets positioned on either side.

The yacht also features a dual-mode propulsion system: the gas turbines and high-performance diesels for ‘sprint mode’ to reach 32+ knots, plus two conventional 9’000kW MTU diesel engines for long-range cruising at 18 knots. This allows her to cross the Atlantic without refueling.

      🏆 THE RECORD-BREAKING BUILD:

The construction of “AZZAM” represents one of the most impressive feats in yacht-building history. Steel cutting began in late 2009 and the yacht was transferred from her original 170-meter dock to a larger 220-meter dock in May 2012. Following just one year of engineering and three years of construction, she was launched on April 5, 2013. This timeline is astonishing for a vessel of her size and complexity (4 years).

An army of more than 4’000 people worked on the build over four years, clocking up six million man-hours before her launch in April 2013. The builders humorously calculated that had the yacht been built by one person, work would have had to start in 1737 BC 😅

🧠 THE MASTERMIND BEHIND THE PROJECT:

Engineer Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi was the visionary who assembled and personally directed the world-class team behind “AZZAM”.

His brief was to create a large luxury yacht with an innovative, timeless design capable of traveling at high speed in warm, shallow waters while providing luxurious accommodation.

Under his leadership, the technical engineering was developed by Lürssen, exterior design by Nauta Yachts and interior design by Christophe Leoni.
