Fun Facts
💵 THE ORIGINAL OWNER WHO DEFAULTED ON THE CONTRACT:
”ALAIYA” was originally commissioned in 2014 by Russian businessman Alexei Fedorychev, owner of the Ukrainian logistics company TIS, which gave the yacht its first name “TIS”.
Construction began in late 2015 at Lürssen's Rendsburg shipyard under the project name "Project Palo Alto" (meaning in italian “project tall pole”… don’t ask me why). The yacht was launched in August 2018 and underwent sea trials through early 2019.
However, in 2018, Fedorychev defaulted on the purchase contract before the yacht's scheduled delivery in June 2019. Lürssen repossessed the vessel and immediately listed her for sale at approximately €275 million (around $300 million USD).
Following Fedorychev's default, the yacht was reportedly purchased by sanctioned Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov in 2020 and renamed "Lady Gulya" after his wife. During this period, the yacht underwent a significant refit in 2020, including a dramatic color change from her distinctive navy blue hull to a beige/cream color that matched the superstructure, creating a monochromatic appearance. However, ownership during this period remains murky and disputed.
Later on, in 2021, before EU sanctions against Russia hit, Alisher reportedly sold his yacht in late 2021 it to the Indian steel magnate, Lakshmi Mittal, renaming her “ALAIYA”.
Alisher was then hit by the sanctions and the yacht, not being owned by him anymore, was legally free to operate in European waters, and remained since untouched by authorities.
🏖️ BEACH CLUB DESIGN PHILOSOPHY:
Andrew Winch described the beach club as the ‘front door’ of the yacht, designed from day one to serve as the primary arrival point. Rather than a typical utilitarian space, it was envisioned as akin to a gentleman's club in St. James's, England, or the Royal Automobile Club in London
It’s meant to be somewhere a place where you can spend several hours watching sports, relaxing and taking saunas whilst having a quick dip in the sea followed by a massage and a fresh-squeezed juice. This philosophy transforms what is typically a functional space into a destination in itself.
💡 SPECIALIZED LIGHTING CHALLENGES:
Preciosa Lighting company was tasked with creating custom chandeliers and wall sconces reminiscent of French Louis XVI style but suitable for marine use.
One of the biggest challenges was developing a special fixing system for glass leaves that could withstand the vibrations of ocean travel. Special fixing wire was added for safety and extensive vibration testing was conducted throughout the production process before the lighting left the factory. Each piece contains unique patina levels, turning every chandelier into a piece of art fitting for classical French interiors.
🏰 WINCH DESIGN'S PALACE-INSPIRED VISION:
Andrew Winch of Winch Design described “ALAIYA” as evoking ‘Edwardian elegance’ from the early 1900s golden age of grand yachting.
The design brief called for the yacht to feel ‘light, fresh and open, but with a classical twist’. The interiors feature Louis XIV to XVIII-inspired furniture, with some antiques from the owner's personal collection complemented by matching pieces created by original French suppliers.
The main saloon features twin sweeping marble staircases with handrails made from 23.8-carat gold, inspired by Le Bristol hotel in Paris. Italian Calacatta Vogli marble is used throughout and the central palatial staircases wind 15 meters through an atrium.
🎨 GEOGRAPHICAL GUEST SUITE THEMES:
One unique design element is that each of the guest suites features styling from different global locations chosen according to the owner's passions, including influences from New York, London, Paris, Marrakech, China, Tuscany, Provence, South East Asia and a Russian dacha.
This creates an adventure-filled experience where guests can travel to different destinations simply by moving between cabins.
Definitely a nice touch, but nothing out of the ordinary as many super yachts color-code their suites.
⭐ AMENITIES ON BOARD:
”ALAIYA” boasts an exceptional array of amenities across her six decks. These include: zero-speed stabilizers for comfort at anchor, a full gym, a multi-deck elevator, a 12-meter (39-foot) oversized swimming pool on the bridge deck aft, a movie theatre with sumptuous tiered seating in dark ‘Art Deco’ style, two helicopter landing pads, a resort-inspired spa with sauna, ice fountain, massage rooms, treatment facilities, a beauty salon adjacent to the owner's suite, an expansive beach club with dining area, bar, a fold-out swimming platform, underwater lights, air conditioning throughout, BBQ facilities and an intimate Parisian-style tea room with Louis XVI-inspired furniture, reportedly inspired by the luxury French bakery Ladurée.
The yacht also features a, extensive tender garage capable of storing two 13-meter (43-foot) tenders (a Wajer 38S utility tender and a Wajer 38L limousine tender), two additional 10-meter (33-foot) tenders, one submarine for underwater exploration and all the traditional water toys. It’s packed.
